The last of our video series for components shows how to use the Anchor List, External (iframes), Reference, Table, Definition List, and List components. These components expand what can be done on a page, adding functionality and creative content to a website and its’ pages.
While there are many more components in the web author toolkit to use, the components you’ve just learned about represent a solid basic set of to that you can use begin editing and creating pages in AEM. There are tutorial videos and help pages for all components, so if you see a component you are curious about using, go to its help page and watch the tutorial video. Want to really emphasize an important link? Have documents for people to read or download? The Button component allows you to create a stylized hyperlink that appears as a button on the page. With different choices for style, create a button that visitors can click on that takes them to important content or pages. Use buttons sparingly though, no more than 3 on a page. Too many buttons de-emphasizes their importance. A button is really for can’t miss content or pages. Hyperlinks should be used as a standard link approach on pages.
The Download Link component works in conjunciton with the DAM and your assets. If you have documents like PDFs (which is the best approach for documents on websites) you can create a download link visitors can click that either opens the document in their browser to view and read or forces a download so that it is saved to their desktop. Why force the download? Forcing the download is a good tool for documents people need to use like a form and makes it waiser for them since otherwise they have to right click in the borwser window to save to their desktop. It saves steps for your users or visitors to your site.
Feature Box and Flip Panel components add a bit of flair to web pages.
The Feature Box gives you a way to promote content using different styles. With boldness of style and flexibility of how you display the content, the Feature Box incorporates image, text, heading, links, and icons to allow you to emphasize important or “featured” content that you want site visitors to see and read. Highlight research, staff, faculty, articles of interest, or any combination of ideas to really share ideas or information on web pages
The Flip Panel is interactive, allowing visitors to your site to engage a page. This should be used sparingly. By hovering over an icon and clicking it, the panel “flips” to the backside much like a playing card, allowing you, as an author, to place content on the front of the panel and the back. Think of it as space-saving and the ability to show content in different ways with emphasis.
Learn how to build a page using the Main template and Simple Banner. Add multimedia components like the Audio Player component for podcasts, the Video Player for MediaSpace videos, and the YouTube Player component for YouTube videos hosted on a Stanford Medicine channel or any YouTube video.
Multimedia allows you as an author to build engaging and visual pages. If you have videos hosted on Stanford Medicine’s video platform MediaSpace, add those videos to your site. If you have YouTube videos, add them too. Podcasts? While many people do not use them, why not try and add some MP4 files. Podcasts are easy to create, can cover any topic, and allows you to expand the content offerings of your site.
Learn how to use the Text & Image component, which allows you to have an image configured to display along with rich text. This component combines text and image together to allow complimentary subjects to be used and configured in one component. with different ways to display the results. This component gives flexibility to how the end result appears on pages.
Learn how to create and edit text on your site using the Text Editor. Need an image? Use the Image component to configure an image with a caption.
AEM allows you to build and wide variety of page layouts. This is accomplished by adding a column component called the Panel Builder. Learn how to configure and use the Panel Builder to build your pages.
Using the Homepage template, learn how to create a multi-image banner and add a distinct heading to the left hand navigation.
This video covers how to navigate from the Welcome page to the Websites site administration. It gives a brief overview of the administration area and how to find your website in the panes.
